Hypothetical Interview with Bilbo (CarsonH)

If I could talk to Bilbo Baggins, I would ask him why he decided to go on this journey. In the beginning of the book, it seemed like he wanted a normal life with no drama or drifting from the schedule, but he went on Gandalf's quest anyway. I would want to know what convinced him to go. I would also ask if he currently regrets going on this adventure. He often talks about wanting to be in his "hobbit-hole" back in his town.
Sometimes it seems like he's enjoying himself, but often he wants to go home.

I would ask these things because it seems unclear at times if he'd rather go on this adventure for gold or wish he'd stayed at his hole. I would just want at least a small clarification as to his state of mind so I (and the readers) could understand him a bit better as a character. With time, the book will probably reveal this, but until then, we can't be sure. Thanks for reading this blog post!

  1. I agree. If he is going to be afraid he should just not have come. Tolkien does make it a little hard to understand exactly how Bilbo is feeling. I wish you would use a little bit of text evidence, so we could see why you feel this way. Overall this is a really good blogpost and I agree with it.
